The Meiji period (1868-1912) implied a profound cultural, social and technological renovation for Japan, which continued after the second WW -due to Restoration of the nation- when it opened to the west. the letter of 1868 abolished feudal privileges and class differences, this led to the old social elites to encourage the preservation and recovery of ancient Shinto traditions, especially Zen.
