This is a reading comprehension exercise. It is interesting to note that Basil and Tenzie have similar points of view. This helps the Basil family become more comfortable with Basil's uniqueness.

Who is Basil?

From the book - One Plus One Equals Blue, Basil's character is portrayed as a twelve-year-old who has a unique way of thinking and seeing the world.

He is unique and he knows it. However, to others, he seemed to be freakish. This thus creates some conflict for Basil which is resolved when he meets Tenzie an equally unique girl from school.

Why do you think tituba was the first one blamed for witchcraft
maria [59]

Tituba was the first one blamed for witchcraft because she was a slave, the lowest of the low, the bottom class, below even the poor and homeless. Not only did this make her an easy target of blame for the girls, but to make her situation worse, she had been known for having known voodoo from her home in Barbados. She had been the one to stir the pot, and to sing songs in her native tongue. It is for all these reasons that the blame of witchcraft was thrown at Tituba. I hope that this answer helped!

An author's purpose in using rhetoric is to
Gemiola [76]

An author's purpose in using rhetoric is to create a certain effect for the reader.

Rhetoric refers to the use of the figure of speech and other techniques through persuasive and effective writings. The use of the figure of speech helps the author to connect with the reader and vice- versa. It helps in the better understanding and feeling of the story-line.

Some of the examples of rhetorical devices are:

 • Alliteration (repetition of initial consonant sound)
 • Simile (comparison of one object with another, not literal)
 • Onomatopoeia (imitation of the word described.)
 • Hyperbole (exaggeration of words), and so on.
