For Freud, personality is developed in the individual as a child, with primary motivators as sexual and aggressive impulses. In order to explain his theory, Freud subdivided the personality structure into three systems: the id, the ego (self), and the superego (higher self). Based on his theory, Freud believed that the way people experienced and resolved each conflict influences personality was lifelong, because the early years provide the basis for adult behavior.
