In any nucleic acid chain (whether viral or cellular), errors may occur during transcription, resulting in a change in genetic information (mutation). This phenomenon only occurs in replication viruses.

In general, the occurrence of these mutations is more common in RNA viruses. The polymerases they use (dependent RNA polymerases) do indeed have no correcting mechanisms (3'-5 'exonuclease activity) unlike DNA-dependent polymerases which must ensure the durability of the genetic code.
