Explanation: The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) were two rounds (SALT I and SALT II) of bilateral conferences and corresponding international treaties involving the United States and the Soviet Union, on the issue of arms control.

SALT II was a series of talks between United States and Soviet Union from 1972 to 1979 which sought to reduce the manufacture of nuclear weapons. It was a continuation of the SALT I talks with representatives from both countries. This became the first nuclear arms treaty which assumed real reductions in strategic forces on both sides.

The treaty was majorly based on the two points above and elements of this agreement were stated to be in effect from 1979 through 1985.
