I believe the answer is: Southerners thought that the North's wage labor system was a bad system

To put in context, the southeners were used to used slave labours where business owners were not required to pay their workers any labour wages. The southeners believe that giving their employees wage labour would dramatically reduce the amount of profit that their plantations could obtain and stunt the states' economic growth.
