Lithography uses a very fine-grained limestone and is based on the repulsion between water and greasy substances.
Unlike other engraving techniques, lithography is planographic, that is, drawing is done through fat applied to the surface of the matrix, not through cracks and grooves in the matrix, as in woodcut and metal engraving.
