The theme is the message or life lesson that a story conveys about a topic. That message, which can be more than one, is not explicitly stated in the story, so the reader has to discover it on its own and express it in a single sentence. So, if a story's topic is "friendship" and "loyalty", for example, a message that the narrative conveys about that topic may be: <em>True friends remain loyal despite hardship</em>.
