The assassination of Lincoln was a blow to America. It inflamed the Republicans against the South, specially because they were already angry because of the Civil War and all the lives that been lost because of it. Four Southern states it encouraged them to fight against what Lincoln stood for, because he was dead and his VP Andrew Johnson was not as strong as Lincoln.
