Effective writing is one that uses the correct grammar of your language and is able to establish effective communication with your audience, through word choices that are consistent with the readers and their degrees of reasoning. In addition, effective writing is cohesive and conveys messages in a fluid and well-established way.
Regarding my type of writing, I believe that there is a long way for me to acquire perfection, for that I try to optimize my common strengths (clarity, direct and simple language, use of more colloquial words and easy to understand phrases) relation to language and diminish my weaknesses (speed, subjects little explored, prolixity and very short narratives).

The answer to you question is Sentence 2. Sentence 2 says "This was around the time that the United states men's ice hockey team shocked the world by winning the gold medal in the winter Olympics in Lake placid."
The reason sent. 2 does not belong is because the whole paragraph is talking about turning a piece of land into a arboretum while sent 2 is talking about a hockey game that was surprisingly won.
Hope this helps! :)
