The United States provided support to the “Contra” revolutionaries in Nicaragua because these people were fighting against a government that was profoundly influenced by communists. Moreover, America did not want to have a communist-backed government nearby to the United States. Throughout the Cold War, the U.S. desired to accommodate communism and prevent it from spreading into new regions of the world. Accordingly, the United States was trying to support even governments that were against the communist regime.
