There’s a point you need to look for in every movie, usually about half and hour before the end, when the hero is defeated in some spectacular way, beaten into submission and presumed dead. We tell ourselves the story again and again because it’s what we want in our darkest hour. We want to believe that something inside of us, some undiscovered or forgotten part, will help us look up from the darkness and rise to fight again.
