Indentured servants were immigrants coming from other countries to America but did not have the means or money to. They ended up signing a contract, usually with a farmer or plantation owner which basically stated they would work for them if the American paid their way to America. The farmer would then provide food, clothing, and shelter and the indentured servant would work for a number of years to pay off their loans. When the contract was over, the indentured slave became free, even though this always didn't happen, they had it better than just a normal slave.
