In 1829 Mexico abolished slavery, but Texas was granted an exception until 1830. That year Mexico made the importation of slaves illegal. Slave owners started calling slaves indentured servants to go around this law when coming into Mexico. I think it's Virgina because Virginia was the home of the first surviving English colony. (Jamestown). The colony was also attacked and almost ruined.
