The Battle of Okinawa took place from April 1 to June 22, 1945 in southern Japan between Japanese and American forces.

The Americans landed on the small Kerama islands near Okinawa on 26 March 1945 and on Okinawa itself on 1 April. The fight was called tetsu no ame, "rain of steel" by the locals.
