Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, and Louis Armstrong were the prominent African American jazz performers during the Harlem Renaissance.

Duke Ellington was a composer and band leader of the Cotton Club.

Bessie Smith was a blues singer who laid the groundwork for modern R&B singers.

Louis Armstrong was a trumpet player and singer. He invented the style of scat singing" and brought a focus on the solo performer within the jazz ensemble.
