Between 1861 and 1865, the United States experienced a decisive inner conflict, the Civil War. During this conflict, the Union forces designed a blockade in an attempt to prevent the export of cotton, and smuggling of war material into the Confederacy.

Ports near the south leading outwards were blocked, which stopped the south from trading with anyone. This eventually led to an inflation of goods and a huge shortage of materials and manufactured goods.
