Sample Response: The central idea of Sotomayor’s speech is that ethnic diversity is important to America, yet sometimes we live in a way that does not honor our nation’s diversity.  Sotomayor consistently cites the importance of her diverse upbringing, showing a clear love for cultural identity. She uses statistics and facts to demonstrate the lack of diversity in judgeships. Sotomayor also declares how important her diversity is in inspiring the way she lives her life.

The main idea in Sonia Sotomayor's "A Latina judge's voice" is that the cultural background and the life experience of any judge is an inevitable part of his/her sentences. And because of this a wider variety in the court offices is a better representation of a diverse society as the American one. She first tells her story, how she was raised in her parents culture, Puerto Rican, and about her professional career. She gives several statistics of the proportional part of black, latinos and women in the American judiciary system to show how better it has become for this minorities and how much is left to be done. She quotes several of her colleagues to support her main thesis, that "there is no objective stance but only a series of perspectives - no neutrality, no escape from choice in judging". So she hopes that her cultural background, experience and way of thinking only affects her judging "when those opinions, sympathies and prejudices are appropriate", as the Supreme Court suggests.

When Gulliver is repulsed by Pedro de Mendez and Gulliver's own family, what does his repulsion show about his character?
Aloiza [94]

It shows an evolution which will alienate him from society for the rest of his life. Indeed, Gulliver has found a race of talking horses that have the perfect society with no crime or vices or any form of corruption. These race of Houyhnhnms is the master of the island and rules over savage, dirty and grotesque humanoid creatures which are called the Yahoos. After spending sometime in the island, Gulliver feels more Houyhnhnm than human and considers humans a backward species. It is to be noted nonetheless, that Gulliver is rescued by a Portuguese captain that is very generous and sensitive and his refusal and disgust to acknowledge this implies that he still has the vice of pride very much ingrained in his nature.

Read the last line of the prologue of Romeo and Juliet. What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend. Which best restates
Vilka [71]

The play we are about to read will fill in the details of this story.

The line is basically saying: What is missed here, our play should fix. Of the response choices, Option A, What is lacking in this description is lacking in our play, is not a correct statement, so this answer is simply wrong. The rest are all correct statements, but only one is the best restatement. B is a correct statement but it adds the idea that there are "juicy details". The line does not hint at whether or not the information is juicy. Option D is also correct, however, the line doesn't say that the prologue is an introduction and it can't include the whole story. Option C is the best choice because it accurately restates the line without adding extra information.

How does the author convey the theme to the author in Our Town?
EastWind [94]
The correct answer is explicitly through Stage Manager. He is the one who tells the audience the events in Emily's life. He also answers Emily's main question about appreciating life or the main theme of the play. It is not through the implicitly because the author is very direct. The authors words are also straightforward. The author's characters are defined by the Stage Manager. Thus the Stage Manager is the key.
