Frederick Douglass's main cause was to abolish slavery and he spoke from bitter experience since he was once a slave. Basically he became a great orator who condemned slavery and also he wrote several autobiographies sharing his experiences as a slave and why he was so opposed to it.

To fix the country's problems with the economy and foreign possible threats he pardoned Nixon. He wasted a lot of time fixing the problems about Nixon so he saw that if he pardoned him he would be able to continue to solve the real problems that affected the whole country. This was a very unpopular move on the average voter and he lost the election.
