Why did the Athens and Sparta join forces to fight the Persians?

While the Persian empire grew, Phillip of Macedonia, and later his son Xerxes, wanted to expand their empire to Greece. Originally, Sparta was the only city state fighting against the Persians. Later they asked for help from the Athenians.
