It was the Red Scare and the Anarchist Movement.  These two developments led to a more isolationist stance in the United States.  The Bolshevik Revolution led to the rise of Communism in Russia and in America, Communist movements often affect labor in industries and Americans became of them and considered them a threat.  Anarchists were also influencing the labor class and that is why the Americans did not like them. Both movements ran counter to democratic and capitalist beliefs.

The event that mostly contributed to the rise of antiimmigrat, antisocialist and antianarchist feeligns in the United States in the years during and after World War I was that they saw what happened in Europe when Socialism was present, they also saw issues which happened with immigration and they were just generally not feeling particularly safe - this always brings about the popularization of the right-wing parties in Europe.
