The correct answer is A. Music should invoke a certain emotion or mood

Explanation:

The doctrine of the affections was one of the most prominent theories that affected theatre, literature, music and other arts during the Baroque era after the Renaissance. This theory proposed emotions, passions, and mood could be represented in art and in the case of music through sounds, which means the emotions the compositor wanted to convey determined the type of sounds the compositor chose and therefore music was always linked to emotion or mood. Additionally, for some, there were six basic emotions or moods (love, joy, desire, sorrow, admiration, and hate) and these can be combined to invoke other emotions. Therefore, the doctrine of the affections stated that music should invoke a certain emotion or mood.

Hi, I’m Lena and I will be answering your question to the best of my ability. If you have any further questions after my answer, do not hesitate to ask me! ツ

♡ Let’s look at the main important thing(s) that will lead you in the correct path.

♥ Key words. You should always look for key words in a passage. For example, if you see "bounced with joy" in a passage, it will most likely be happy.

♡ Let's solve the question together.

The house dog lay stretched out on the floor,

Where the shade, afternoons, used to steal;

The busy old wife by the open door,

Was turning the spinning wheel,

And the old brass clock on the mantle tree,

Had plodded along to almost three.

♥ Again, look for key words. We can see stretched and shade. That gives us a clue that it's calm. We can also use POE, meaning process of elimination. At first glance, it may seem sad, but there's nothing to be sad about. There's nothing hopeless or too happy, so it's calm.

It seems to me that, the thing wthat the author has done in order to create a tone of seriousness in this piece is a fact that he has used a long sentence with complex syntax to ask the reader to pay close attention.
Even though you haven't shared any options to choose the correct one, I bet this one will suit the question.
Regards.
