People could only vote for one party and they could not criticize the government. Media was also censored and could only publish what the government said they could.

In practical terms, under communism, especially during the dark and authoritarian phases, like Stalinism, people lost their freedom of speech as this was highly censored and controlled, and when the system deemed it necessary, also punished.
