The coriolis effect does this. This is a inertial force that acts on objects that are in motion relative to a rotating reference frame. This means that when the earth rotates, objects in the north hemisphere is deflected to the right, while objects in the southern hemisphere are deflected to the left. This makes the winds shift left or right.

Corioliseffect causes ocean surface currents to be deflected from overall wind currents.

Further Explanation:

Coriolis Effect is the deflection of any matter because of Coriolis's force which is a psychophysical perception. The Coriolis Effect plays an important role in the driving of wide-ranging wind currents on the Oceans' surface.

Oceans currents are the continuous directed motion of seawater that is generated by numerous forces acting on the water. The effect influences the direction and intensity of the current. The oceanic currents are primarily horizontal movement of water.

Coriolis Effect drives the oceanic current to a great distance that plays an important role in determining the climatic condition of many regions of the Earth as it influences the humidity of the regions from where it passes.Warm current increases the warmth of the region and cold current decreases the humidity of the region. This phenomenon can be marked in the regions of Gulf Stream.
