Many women took jobs that fell outside the traditional realm of women's work.

When the men left to become soldiers in the war, the women were left to practically run the entire country.  All of the industries that had been run by men were taken over by women.  Answer choice C is correct in terms of women having to give the jobs back to returning soldiers, but that happened AFTER the war; not during.
