While this was happening near the fire, more errors were taking place a mile and a half away. Chicago had recently renovated its

fire alarm system, making it one of the best in the nation. Each firehouse had a watchman who scanned the immediate neighborhood for flames or smoke during the night. Overlooking the entire city was a watchman in the cupola of the Courthouse, one hundred feet above the ground. If a fire was spotted, an alarm was telegraphed (either from the firehouse or from one of the many alarm boxes situated around town) to the Courthouse; the Courthouse watchman then relayed the location of the blaze to the firehouses nearest to it. For added security, the giant Courthouse bell was also rung. Because of the drought, special Insurance Patrols had been organized and Benjamin Bullwinkle was appointed to head them. These patrols roamed the streets at night, ready to put out small fires with chemical extinguishers and turn in alarms for bigger blazes. While this system sounds very cumbersome to us, back in 1871 it was considered quite speedy and efficient.

Answer:

B. “Chicago had recently renovated its fire alarm system, making it one of the best in the nation.”

Explanation:

This sentence is the claim in the text. The rest of the paragraph unfolds reasons and evidence that support it. For example, there were watchmen in firehouses ;in diffent boxes placed  around the city; and  in the cupola of the Courthouse. The men in the firehouses and in the boxes , if a fire was spotted, would telegraph an alarm to the man in the Courthouse. This would  ring a bell to make the alarm more reliable. Well-organised Patrols would  drive around the streets to extinguish the fires. The paragraph concludes with an opinion about the fire alarm system: <em>quite speedy and efficient.</em>

Whats the setting in Rules of the game by Amy tan
adoni [48]

Answer:

Chinatown in San Francisco.

Explanation:

The setting of a story can be the geographical location, time period, or anything that can tell the readers about the location of the scenes. This provides the backdrop for the scenes that will happen and also acts as an added detail to the story.

Amy Tan's "Rules of the Game" is set in <em>"San Francisco's Chinatown"</em>, with the narrator explicitly stating that out in the third paragraph of the story. The story revolves around a Chinese-American girl named Waverly and her family, and the efforts to be at par with American life.
