Realpolitik is a foreign policy where you establish relations with another country that to strengthen your standings or for support to protect your interests from your enemies.  Unfortunately both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. established relations with countries ruled by dictators to further their interests.  Many people were imprisoned or killed as a result of this policy.
