1870-1900

From the era of Reconstruction to the end of the 19th century, the United States underwent an economic transformation marked by the maturing of the industrial economy, the rapid expansion of big business, the development of large-scale agriculture, and the rise of national labor unions and industrial conflict.

An outburst of technological innovation in the late 19th century fueled this headlong economic growth. However, the accompanying rise of the American corporation and the advent of big business resulted in a concentration of the nation's productive capacities in fewer and fewer hands. Mechanization brought farming into the realm of big business as well, making the United States the world's premier food producer--a position it has never surrendered. But still the land hunger of white Americans continued unabated. This led to wars against the Native Americans of the Plains and the "second great removal" of indigenous peoples from their ancient homelands.

Indispensable to this growth and development were an unprecedented surge in immigration and urbanization after the Civil War. American society was in transition. Immigrants arriving from southern and eastern Europe, from Asia, Mexico, and Central America, were creating a new American mosaic. And the power of Anglo-Saxon Protestants--once so dominant--began to wane.

What many thought of as progress, however, others regarded with apprehension. Agricultural modernization disrupted family farms, for example, provoking the country's farmers to organize protest movements as never before. And the social problems that accompanied the nation's industrial development fueled the rise of national labor unions and unprecedented clashes between capital and labor. This discontent captured the attention of reformers and politicians who began to challenge traditional party politics through third-party movements.

As he entered the white house, which of james k. polk's goals led to war?
topjm [15]
The policy of manifest destiny lead Polk and the US to enter war. Manifest destiny is the belief that it is the destiny of the US to expand their power/influence all across North America (from the Atlantic to the Pacific).

In order to accomplish this goal, the US needed some territory from Mexico. This was one of the biggest causes of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Fighting along the Rio Grande river lead to this war, which resulted in the US gaining a significant amount of territory from Mexico. This includes land such as California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado.

Read about the state constitution of Texas, the Constitution of 1876. What are some similarities between this state constitution
WARRIOR [948]

Answer:

Prior to its independence, Texas was governed as a part of Mexico under the Mexican Constitution of 1824. Established as a federal republic, each state could write its own constitution. Combined as a single state, Texas and Coahuila established a constitution in 1827. Under this constitution, legislative power was delegated to a unicameral legislature composed of twelve deputies, including two elected from Texas by popular vote. The legislature met annually from January through April and could be called into special session. Executive power was vested in a governor and vice-governor, elected to four-year terms by popular vote. The governor could recommend legislation, grant pardons, lead the state militia, and see that the laws were obeyed. Judicial authority was vested in state courts that oversaw minor criminal trials and civil cases. The courts could not interpret the law, and misdemeanor cases were tried by a judge without a jury. Texans ignored two provisions, one that required Catholicism as the state religion and the other that did not recognize slavery
