Hey there!

The first democracy, and all democracy in Athens was a fully direct democracy(we use a representative democracy here in the US- we're a republic). However, not just anybody could vote directly on laws. There were pretty strict rules. First off, you had to be a free man(not a slave) over the age of 18 years old and born in Athens. These laws applied to the senate mostly as well.

The democracy in Athens influenced many other civilizations, and ultimately led to the Hellenistic Era where Alexander the Great adopted Greek customs, and even the Roman Republic, that used the democratic ideals of Athens to create an arguably fairer and more organized republic- designed to maintain a stronger and more vast empire.

Hope this helps!
