Also, in an effort to pay for the war, Britain heavily imposed taxes on the colonists. The British also sent troops to Boston and in the process 5 colonists were killed. In protest, especially against the tea act, the Sons of Liberty dumped over a million dollars worth of tea into the Boston Harbor in an event now known as the Boston Tea Party. Consequently, the British King passed a series of acts known as the coercive or intolerable acts. This act closed the Boston harbor until the colonists paid up the money for the tea. All of these events compelled the continental Congress (representatives from all the colonies except Georgia) to come together and write a list of grievances against Britain to repeal their taxes. All of these led to the Declaration of Independence addressing all their grievances against Britain and their thoughts on Freedom.
