The first tale is based upon the legendary folk tale of Sun Wukong, or The Monkey King, a character from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The second tale is the story of a second-generation child of immigrants named Jin Wang, who has moved from San Francisco's Chinatown to a mostly white suburb.
This is a theme. The difference between those two is that the plot is similar to the storyline, whereas themes are general thoughts being analyzed. In this case, this is a theme, whereas something more detailed with description of events would be a plot.
Humans were the dominant beings of society, which is definitely comparable to today's society. The culture in which the selection was first told was (more than likely) learning that although humans don't do much for animals, they provide a lot for us.
