Answer:

1. Mr. Simpson = S

2. gave = V

3. Jim = IO

4. a lesson in archery = DO

Explanation:

1. A subject is a noun or pronoun that performs the main action of a sentence or the one that is being described or dealt with. “Mr. Simpson” is the person that performs the main action.

2. Verbs indicates an action or state. The verb “gave” indicates an action in the simple past tense.

3. and 4. A direct object is a noun or a pronoun that receives the action in the sentence; they can be identified by answering the “what?” or the “who?” questions. In contrast, an indirect object is a noun or a pronoun that receives the direct object or that is affected by it. We can identify an indirect object by first identifying the direct object, and then answering the “for/to whom?” or “for/to what?” questions. Very often, when a sentence contains both an indirect object and a direct object, the indirect object is placed first (just like in the sentence).

In this case, the direct object is “a lesson in archery” because it directly receives the action “gave.” If any doubts, it also answers the question “What did Mr. Simpson give?.” The indirect object is “Jim” because it is the person that receives a lesson in archery, furthermore, it also answers the question “To whom did Mr. Simpson give a lesson in archery?”
