The biggest determining factor was the social gap and how the privileged performed discrimination and abuse.

Explanation:

Slovaks experienced this duality because of 3 things, the first one was that many people were satisfied with their current condition. Those were the favored by the political party in power. However, those who were not favored were against the rulers and expressed their opposition and desire for a change. In the second place, the access to opportunities not depended on personal effort or development, but how much money your family had and how you used it to achieve development. People without resources employed everything they had to survive; they were not capable of overcoming poverty. In third place unfair social behavior. While racism was not a big deal, monetary, power and social position discrimination was a big deal. Thus, people who were privileged not only lived better lives than those who did not but they performed discrimination for having a better chance of achieving a better development.
