Two incinerators are being considered by a waste management company. Design A has an initial cost of $2,500,000, has annual oper

ating and maintenance costs of $800,000, and requires overhauls every 5 years at a cost of $1,250,000. Design B is more sophisticated, including computer controls; it has an initial cost of $5,750,000, has annual operating and maintenance costs of $600,000, and requires overhauls every 10 years at a cost of $3,000,000. Using a 5 percent/year interest rate, determine the capitalized cost for each design and recommend which should be chosen.

Answer: please refer to the explanation section

Explanation:

Design A

Initial cost $2500 000

operating and maintenance cost = $800 000

Overhauls = $1250000 in 5 years

R = 5%

PV= overhaul cost/(1+r)^n + maintenance cost(1 -(1+r)^-5)/r

PV = 1250000/(1 + 0.05)^5  + 800000(1 - (1 + 0.05)^-5)/0.05

PV = 979407.71 + 3463581.34 = 4442989.05

costs to be capitalized = present value of overhaul costs = 979407. 71

Design A will be valued at = 2500000 +  979407. 71 = 347907.71

Total cost of Choosing Design A = 979407.71 + 3463581.34 + 2500000

Total cost of Choosing Design A = 6942989.05

Design B

initial cost = $5750000

Operating and Maintenance = $600000

Overhauls = $3000000 in 10 years

PV= overhaul cost/(1+r)^n + maintenance cost(1 -(1+r)^-5)/r

PV = 3000000/(1 + 0.05)^10  + 600000(1 - (1 + 0.05)^-10)/0.05

PV = 1841739.76 + 4633040.96 = 6474780.72

Cost to be capitalized = overhaul cost = 1841739.76

Design B will be value at = 1841739.76 + 5750000 = 7591739.76

Total cost of costs Design B = 1841739.76 + 5750000 + 4633040.96

Total cost of costs Design B = 12224780.72

Design B involves more costs than Design A. Present value for total cost for choosing Design B is Higher than the present value for Total costs of choosing Design A

Choose Design A

Ksivusya [100]

Answer:

a. the cost of reducing it's existing pollution by one unit.

Explanation:

Marginal cost refers to the addition to total cost when one more unit of output is produced. Marginal cost in the given case would refer to the additional cost incurred for reducing the current pollution level by one unit.

In the given case, a firm is charged $250 for each unit of pollution emitted under the pollution tax option.

It is also stated that all the firms experience increasing marginal costs of pollution reduction.

This means, as additional units of pollution are reduced, the additional costs would go on increasing.

If a firm finds that, reducing 1 unit of pollution from the current level costs it equal or more than $250, it will opt to pay $250 since, for each subsequent unit of pollution reduction, the additional costs would rise.

Answer:

Rivercity Coffee Shop

Chad cannot sue Jose.  The $10,000 is paid to Jose is a bribe.  Since a bribe is not legal, it cannot form the basis for an enforceable contract.

Moreover, the offer by Chad is an antitrust and anti-competition consideration that is legally frowned upon. illegal contract

Explanation:

For a contract to be enforceable, it cannot be illegal.  A bribe is illegal.  The basis for the contract is illegal.  Therefore, Chad cannot sue Jose.  Since Jose decided to breach the contract, neither Chad nor Jose is entitled to any compensation.  Jose cannot be held liable for non-performance.

As the Board of Governors of the American Red Cross considers planning, one option is to make strategic plans and then direct ma
frutty [35]

Answer:

The answers are:

  • When managers come up with their own plans, they are likely to be more committed to following through on them.
  • The environment is a dynamic one, and department and front line managers can come up with more responsive plans than can central leadership.

Explanation:

Personally I consider a very good idea if the Board of Governors decides to hire planning specialists to help regional or local managers develop their own plans. There are several advantages with this approach:

Regional managers know their "markets" and how to act and deal with them. I guess most of the Board of Governors is made up of wealthy or very important members, and many times their reality is very different than that of normal regular people.

Also, if regional managers can come up with their own plans, they will be extremely motivated to follow them through. They know that if something goes wrong, all the fingers will blame them.
