Anne Hutchinson was an Englishwoman who had come to the American continent in the 1630s to show the corruption of the Churches in England who preached that a person's soul can be saved and attain salvation by doing good deeds to others and in the society which directly contradicts the true Christian belief of attaining salvation only through belief in Christ. She began to give post sermon lectures in her home which was attended my majority of the town people. This angered the priests and was accused of heresy and convicted of speaking against the preachers and was thrown out of the society. By the characterization of Hester Prynne as going against the conventional societal norms, Hawthorne is basing her character on Anne.
