Read the text, then answer the question that follows: Wild animals as viewed from a mountain camp—Camille Grant, October 2011 Th

rough my binoculars, I viewed a group of wild animals in action. A pride of lions was sleeping when a small, yellow bus pulled up beside them. Tourists on a safari were packed into the bus like sardines in a can. Armed with cameras, they invaded the lions' territory, hoping to capture the perfect photograph. The crowd leaned out the windows, hooting and hollering, until the lions awoke. When the lions moved away, the bus rolled after them, relentlessly stalking the pride. One of the lions turned and roared to protect the young. This was greeted with cheers and a celebratory honk of the bus horn. The curious visitors observed the lions' routine for an hour before moving on. Leaving a cloud of dust, the bus headed away, taking the wild animals off to disturb someone else's home. Review the following line from the text: The nosy visitors observed the lions' routine for nearly an hour before moving on. To create a more positive connotation, the author could have replaced the word nosy with which of the following synonyms?
Curious
Intrusive
Meddlesome
Prying

Answer:

The given lines are taken from the book "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.

Explanation:

Zora Neale Hurston's <em>Their Eyes Were Watching God</em> tells the story of African American women trying to survive in the world of the white authority. The narrator Janie tells her friend Phoeby about her three husbands and the life she had to live, trying to survive.

The given passage is spoken by Nanny/ Janie's grandmother after her first marriage to Logan Killicks. And for Nanny, the union was a successful deal done, with land and a lawful husband, and all things that white women have. The passage reveals Nanny telling her granddaughter how a man and a woman should love equally. A man must have his pride and love a woman right, not kiss her foot and leg. Just like Nanny said <em>"when dey got to bow down tuh love, dey soon straightens up</em>". If he's kissing her foot and leg, meaning treating her too well, then there's only a short time when he will get back to his usual self.
