In 1862 and 1863, both the Union Navy and Army tried and failed to capture Vicksburg.

Explanation:

  • The Civil War in America. In the year 1862, from the month of April to November.
  • In beginning 1862, the Potomac's Union Army led the attack on the Virginia Peninsula, where its final destination was Richmond, the Confederate capital. Northern morale was high.
  • In 1862 and early 1863, both the Army and  Union Navy attempted and lost to capture Vicksburg.
  • Trials after that by Union generals Grant and Sherman in late 1862 and early 1863 to strike the city with bands also were worked off by the Confederates, who were well established in the city.
