One was in the North, which did not like slavery, and wanted it abolished
the other was the heartland of the Confederacy, and fought for the right to own slaves
Advantages
They need not fear that their vote will impeach them. In other words they get to vote their conscience.
The experience they gain from the years of service makes them experts in the particular law they are judging.
Disadvantage
Should they become ill (I'm thinking of the Supreme Court here), their vote may mean something if they are not there.
They become to set in their ways.
