The man sits on the spot where he knows the dead corpse of the man he killed lies.He hears the heart beat and feels that even though he committed a perfect crime, for himself, he has to confess as he is being annihilated by guilt. The fact that he is proud after what he has done, putting an end to " the "evil eye" and also feels guilty about it shows the man is mad. Moreover, he has confessed himself mad at the beginning of the story.
