During the latent phase of the first stage of labor, the nurse will observe the contractions and cervix dilatation. Contraction is tightening of the muscle of the uterus.

Further Explanation

There are three stages of labor

A. Stage 1 is when the contraction begins until the mother reaches full cervical dilatation. This longest stage of labor divided into three phases:

 1. Latent phase: During this phase, the contraction just started and still irregular and vary in frequency and strength. Your cervix will dilate (open) to 3 centimeters and efface. This phase can be last for days or weeks.
 2. Active phase: The contraction will be stronger, longer and closer. Cervix dilated from 3 to 7 cm. For the first time mother usually this phase is longer than mother who previously gave birth.
 3. Transition phase: The contractions are longer, stronger and more intense. The cervix is fully dilated and ready to deliver the baby.

B. Stage 2 is the delivery of the baby

C. Stage 3 is the delivery of the placenta.
