Communication. Colonialists faced a lot of challenges and the most immediate was communication. They hence needed to come up with their own methods to be able to communicate without any difficulties.
It could be argued that one good thing that resulted from the crusades was that there was cultural diffusion, but the bad thing was that thousands of lives were lost.
