The doctrine of laissez faire is characterized by a governmental abstention of direction or interference especially with the individual freedom of choice and action; a doctrine that opposes government interference in economic matters, thus allowing the most efficient allocation of resources in an economy, and the only government regulations that exist will be to protect the individual rights of the person, property rights and nothing else, achieving thus an absolute freedom in the economy.

The only function of government, for this doctrine, is the task of protecting the natural rights of people. The government acts as an agent of people's right to self-defense and can use force only in reprisal and only against those who initiate its use.
