This caused crop prices to drop, which squeezed the farmers financially. The railroads were also a problem for farmers.

This could also be considered as blasphemy against the church. in other words because the theory of evolution rivaled those of the church, therefore church was against the teaching of it. this is because they didn't want people to begin questioning the legitimacy of the church or their teachings.
