Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were explorers sent by Jefferson to study nature and geography. 
It was an important expedition that took two years to complete, during which they explored the western part of the United States. Their mission was to make a map of those areas, as well as study the geography and wildlife in the state of Louisiana, especially.
