A historical significance of the election of Andrew Young as mayor of Atlanta was that an African American mayor handed over the keys of a major city to another African American.

Further Explanations:

Andrew Young Jr. was a civil rights activist equivalent to“Martin Luther King” Jr. Starting his early life as a pastor of Georgia, he involved himself in the “Civil Rights Movement” and organized a voter registration drive. During 1964, he presided over the posts of SCLC and during his tenure, he helped in the withdrawal of the “Voting Right act” of 1965 and the “Civil Rights Act” of 1964.

In 1981, the office of mayor of Atlanta was run by the widow of Junior Martin Luther. Later in that year, he was elected for the office of the Mayor of Atlanta with 55% of the total vote cast defeating Maynard Jackson. The election was historically very significant as the office of the mayor was passing from an African American mayor to another African American Mayor.
