Excerpt: Then I saw the dead god. He was sitting in his chair, by the window, in a room I had not entered before and, for the first moment, I thought that he was alive. Then I saw the skin on the back of his hand—it was like dry leather. The room was shut, hot and dry—no doubt that had kept him as he was. At first I was afraid to approach him—then the fear left me. He was sitting looking out over the city—he was dressed in the clothes of the gods. His age was neither young nor old—I could not tell his age. But there was wisdom in his face and great sadness. You could see that he would have not run away. He had sat at his window, watching his city die—then he himself had died. But it is better to lose one's life than one's spirit—and you could see from the face that his spirit had not been lost. I knew, that, if I touched him, he would fall into dust—and yet, there was something unconquered in the face.

Answer: The narrator has learned to respect the gods, even in death, rather than fear them.

Explanation:

Narrator is a person that can be found in literature who is there to narrates events, situations and often character of poem or a novel.

  • He can give us comments, his opinions and his point of view of the story. By that, when we are talking about narrator's reaction to the conflict in the poem or novel we can see what he is thinking about it so it can give us another direction of the story or it can show us the key of it.
  • Some of the narrator types are: First, Second or Third person; Limited or Omniscient narrator; Objective narrator and more.

In this passage we can see that the narrator is showing his respect for gods always and he will rather respect them than feel something bad about them, like fear for example.

It is best showed in this part of an excerpt: ''But it is better to lose one's life than one's spirit—and you could see from the face that his spirit had not been lost.''

Delvig [45]
Banquo has done nothing wrong. He has been a good friend to Macbeth, never been disloyal nor was he a traitor. But Macbeth was suspicious of him because he was there when one of the prophecies referred to Banquo's heirs being heirs to the throne. Macbeth worries that his good friend will be suspicious of Duncan's murder because he was there when the prophecy said that Macbeth would be king. He wants to avoid a fruitless crown, so he decides to kill Banquo and his son in order to ensure that none of Banquo's issue take the throne after him.
