Answer:

Literal Meaning: I am so hungry that I'll probably eat three or four helpings of dinner. I easily jumped over the barrels on my horse, Skip.

Figurative Meaning: It cost her an arm and leg to replace the refrigerator when it broke. You are barking up the wrong tree if you're trying yo get information from me.

Explanation:

A statement uses a figurative language when it deviates from their literal or real meaning, relying on figures of speech such as metaphors, similes and hyperbole (blatant exaggeration) to represent something else and give readers new insights. On the contrary, a statement uses a literal language when it is is realistic, accurate and free from exaggeration and distortion.

The statement <em>I am so hungry that I'll probably eat three or four helpings of dinner</em> expresses a literal meaning because although four helpings of dinner is a lot, some people can have them. Likewise, <em>I easily jumped over the barrels on my horse, Skip</em> also represents reality.

The sentence <em>It cost her an arm and leg to replace the refrigerator when it broke </em>express a figurative meaning because the idiomatic expression "It cost her an arm and leg" is simply a blatant exaggeration to convey how expensive it was to replace the refrigerator and, therefore, it does not represent reality.

Similarly, the sentence <em>You are barking up the wrong tree if you're trying to get information from me</em> uses a idiomatic expression: to be barking up the wrong tree, and it should not be taking literally as it means to be wrong about something.

The passage is not given so I cannot exactly tell but judging on the choices my best guess is C. It shows the Young’s are poor because things like the letter-box and doorbell are rundown, broken.

Match each example of figurative language with its meaning. stood like a pillar of cloud torn and faded banners of the departed
vova2212 [387]

Explanation:

<em>1. "stood like a pillar of cloud torn"</em>

Figurative language: <u>a Simile.</u>

Meaning: A Simile is a figurative language that makes a comparison between two things of a different kind to make a vivid description using 'like' or 'as'. In this example, the author is comparing someone who stood to a 'pillar of cloud torn'. This compares how unadmiring a torn pillar of cloud is with the way the person stood.

2.<em> "faded banners of the departed summer ancient blood-stains against the dark-blue sky" </em>

Figurative language: <u>a Metaphor</u>

Meaning: a Metaphor is symbolic (non-literal) comparison of an object or action with another thing, action, or idea in other to explain an idea. Hence, the expression, "<em>summer ancient blood-stains" </em>refers to horrific events in the past that resulted in <em>"dark-blue sky"</em> (or grief).
