<span>The farmers were very much against the Whisky Tax that was made into law in 1791 during the administration of President George Washington.  The purpose of the tax was to raise funds to pay for the war debt gained during the Revolutionary War.  Farmers resisted this law  and many of them were war veterans believed that they were battling against taxation that had no representation.  Still the law was legal and the government reaffirmed that it was within Congress’ legal expression of its taxation laws. This led to widespread acts of violence that government sent the militia to quell the protesters.</span>
