His murder was one of the causes of social unrest and an agitation for the Civil Rights movement.

Emmett Till was kidnapped by the woman's husband and presumably tortured to his death and his corpse was later discovered in the Tallahatchie river.

The accused, Bryant and Milam stood trial for murder but the all white jury took just 67 minutes to find them not guilty and one of the jurors later said in an interview that it wouldn't have taken that long if they didn't stop to drink pop.
