The main factor leading to France being in bankrupt, was its involvement in  supporting the American War of Independence (1776). Also the living standars of the King and the nobility , living a luxurious life and spending irresponsably despite the country's internal situation.

The following years saw poor harvests and France had to face bankruptcy.

Neither nobility nor clergy paid direct tax.

The government was unable to restore financial system and they could no longer function. The falied attempts to keep the old ways then gave birth to the French revolution.
